Breastfeeding in Toronto: 2017 results are in!

Baby breastfeeding

In 2017, Toronto Public Health surveyed over 1,000 moms in Toronto whose babies were 6 months old. We wanted to find out how they were feeding their babies in the first 6 months of life. You may have been one of the mothers we contacted!

Here’s what we found out:

  • 98% of Toronto moms fed or attempted to feed their baby breastmilk.
  • At about six months, 7.5 out of 10 babies were receiving breastmilk.
  • At about six months, 1.4 out of 10 babies were exclusively breastfeeding (babies who received human milk and had never received infant formula or other liquids).
  • Exclusive breastfeeding rates were lower for babies born by Caesarian-section, first time moms, moms with less education, moms born outside of Canada, lower income families and single moms.

Thanks very much to all the mothers who participated in the survey. The results of the survey will help us to plan better infant feeding services.

Did you know the World Health Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding up to six months, and continued breastfeeding beyond two years?
