5 New year resolutions for a healthy pregnancy

Individual holding a sparklerWhat’s your New Year resolution? Although many of us may like making New Year resolutions, it’s not always easy finding ways to reach those goals.

Tips to have a healthy start for a healthy pregnancy:

  1. Understand yourself

The New Year is a perfect time to reflect on what you want. What is important to you right now? What is important to you before and after your baby is born? Take some quiet time to write down a list of what your goals are and how you want to reach those goals.

Knowing yourself is the 1st step towards having a healthy start.

  1. Choose healthier foods

In our Canadian Prenatal Nutrition Programs, I’ve spoken to parents who struggle with eating healthy because changing their diets meant changing how they enjoyed their food. Eating healthy doesn’t mean eating bland or boring foods. Spice up your meals by trying our healthy but tasty recipes for lentil soup and sweet potato fries. You can also aim to increase your fruits and veggies, drink more water and eat a variety of foods.

  2. Get active – start small!

Exercising during your pregnancy can help your baby’s health and your health. If you were not exercising before your pregnancy, you may find it hard to add exercise into your day.  Talk to your primary healthcare provider to find activities that are safe for you to do. Start small and take baby steps.Walking is a simple but great way to stay active. You can make it more interesting by having a walking buddy, matching your steps to your favourite music or walking around the shopping malls in the winter (but keep an eye on your wallet!).

  3. Be kind to yourself – Rest when needed.

Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. Stress can negatively affect your pregnancy. Be kind to yourself and rest when you need to. Some examples to help you relax include spending time with your loved ones, watching a movie, meditating or taking a nap. Find a positive activity that works for you.

  4. Find your supports. Reach out to the people you trust.

You don’t have to do this alone. Think about the family, friends and supports around you – who do you feel comfortable talking to? Supports can be anyone like your primary healthcare provider or Toronto Public Health.
