Programs for new parents: Where to take your baby in Toronto?

When you’re a new parent it may be difficult to know where to go with your baby.

Maybe you are looking to go out somewhere that’s baby friendly.  Or maybe you are thinking about going to a place to meet other new parents and learn more about parenting or baby’s growth & development.

As a Public Health Nurse, I get many questions from new parents asking where they can go to join programs with their baby.

Programs available to parents/caregivers in Toronto:

Each of the places listed offer:

  • A baby friendly environment
  • Programs about parenting
  • Programs that support baby’s growth & development
  • The chance to meet other new parents

EarlyON Child and Family Centres

These centres offer free programs to parents/caregivers and their children, from birth to six years of age, that:

  • Help strengthen adult-child relationships
  • Support parent education
  • Foster healthy child development

Toronto Public Libraries (TPLs)

TPLs provide free services that promote early literacy in a welcoming and supportive environment.  They offer:

Toronto Recreation Centres

Recreation centres are fun places for people of all ages to exercise, learn new skills, get information and meet new people.  They have:

  • Pools
  • Rinks
  • Gymnasiums
  • Meeting rooms

You may have to pay for some activities but there are also free & lower-cost options.

Toronto Public Health offers:

  • Child health & development workshops, screening clinics and more through partnerships with community agencies
  • Online information and tips on common parenting topics
  • Pregnancy to Parenting Blog with lots of great parenting information, including child development, support and recipes for the whole family.

Getting out with a new baby can be hard, especially when the weather is bad, but it’s so good for you, your mental health and also very healthy for your baby!!
