Most herbal teas are not recommended to drink during pregnancy or breastfeeding. It may be hard for some tea lovers to stop or limit the amount of herbal teas they drink once they find out they’re pregnant. Luckily, there are many other drink options to keep you hydrated.
Teas are not all the same: The black, green, and white teas
Did you know that there are different types of tea? Not all teas are considered herbal teas. If you are drinking black, green, and white tea made only from tea leaves then you are not drinking herbal products. It is important to consider how much of these teas you are drinking as they do contain caffeine.
Herbal teas
Herbal teas are usually made from dried fruits, herbs and flowers. Though most herbal teas are caffeine-free, there are many herbs that could be harmful to moms and babies. There is not enough research to know which teas are safe to drink in pregnancy and while breastfeeding. For these reasons, I recommend that my clients limit drinking herbal teas. Flavoured water is always a great choice, made both cold and warm.
If you do choose to drink herbal teas, make sure you are aware of the ingredients and limit the amount you drink to two cups (or 500mL) a day.
