Pregnant and new to Canada? Join CPNP for free

Pregnant individuals in a class

If you’re pregnant and new to Canada, the Canadian Prenatal Nutrition Program (CPNP) may be just right for you! Sarah Aldous, a Public Health Nurse who works in one of the many CPNP programs in Toronto, shares her thoughts below on why she thinks you should join.

I help facilitate one of the 36 Toronto CPNP programs. This free weekly program gives eligible parents the time to speak with Public Health Nurses, like me, and also with Registered Dietitians. We can answer your questions related to pregnancy and childbirth.

At the CPNP where I work, we often invite guest speakers to share their skills and help us to learn more about being healthy during pregnancy.

This past year we have heard from a:

  • Midwife – who talked about childbirth, what happens after the baby is born and how to care for a newborn baby
  • Dental Health Promotion Specialist – who talked about looking after our teeth and where to get free dental care
  • Toronto Employment and Social Services Caseworker – who showed us how to apply for financial or employment assistance
  • Community Settlement worker – who explained how to get daycare support
  • Yoga instructor – who showed us how to relax, stretch and exercise safely.

At CPNP you get quality time with health and community experts like the ones listed above. You can also get support from the other parents who attend to help you manage your questions and concerns. It can feel lonely to be pregnant and living in a new country. But at a CPNP you can meet friends, eat a healthy snack and learn more about what to expect when having a baby in Canada. Language interpretation may also be provided.
