Whether this is your first or third baby, pregnancy is a start of a new chapter in your life. Throughout pregnancy a number of changes happen to your body and in your family life. For some, these changes take place smoothly, for others it may need a few adjustments.
Having the support from someone that you trust and feel comfortable with can help you have a positive experience.
During pregnancy your body changes quickly and makes hormones that nurture and support the growing baby. For some, these hormones may cause emotional ups and downs. As a result, you may feel more tired, and in need of extra support.
You may be more interested in the pregnancy than your partner and less or more interested in sex than before. With all these changes, and as the new role of being a parent approaches, it is not uncommon to experience stress and relationship challenges.
Tips to build a healthy and supportive relationship:
- Share your feelings and desires openly
- Respect each other’s opinion and ideas
- Have an equal say in the relationship
- Express your needs and limits in the relationship
- Be open and honest about your sexual needs
- Talk about your hopes and dreams for your family
- Find time to spend together
- Never use threats of harm or violence in a relationship
Pregnancy is a time that demands increased relationship commitment, and requires effort to support and understand each other.
